So what is a QR Code, how does it work and how can your business use it and benefit?
A QR Code (Quick Response) is a smart phone readable bar code that can store website URL's, plain text, phone numbers, email addresses and pretty much any alphanumeric data.
Storing up to 4296 characters they are internationally standardised under ISO 18004, so a QR code is a QR code all over the world - they've been big in Japan forever, broke into Europe and the UK several years back, and are now getting real traction in the USA.
In its simplest sense, think "print based hypertext link" - simply encode a URL into the QR Code and then point a mobile phone (or other camera-enabled mobile) at it.
If the device has had QR Code decoding software installed on it, it will fire up its browser and go straight to that URL.
But it doesn't stop there...
A QR Code can also contain a phone number, an SMS message, V-Card data or just plain alphanumeric text, and the scanning device will respond by opening up the correct application to handle the data.
Incorporate QR Codes into your marketing strategy and benefit from an increase in customer traffic and potential sales.
Here are some examples of how to use them:
- To transfer contact information: QR codes can be used on business cards, name badges at conferences, branded clothing & uniforms.
- To drive traffic to special offers: You could use QR codes so that people could find offers from your business.
- To drive traffic to websites from display ads: We are beginning to see QR codes in print ads, on sign boards, vehicles, clothing and even on television. New York City has already placed a giant QR code on a display ad in Times Square. Developers of Android software are using QR codes extensively.
Since it’s often easier for phone users to scan a code than to type in a long website address, you’ll often see QR codes on websites for mobile apps. This is just the start and we are bound to soon see new and creative uses for QR codes in the near future.
